MARIAH CAREY

THE R&B STAR SAYS SHE HAS LOST WEIGHT BUT IS STILL WARY OF CAMERAS ON THE BEACH. INTERVIEW BY JESSICA HUIE

Before I became famous, I spent 600 hours at a beauty school. As a result, I love giving my friends and my crew facials – when anyone has a spot I’m the one they come to.

It annoys me that people presume I’ve had something done, just because I’ve lost some weight recently. I work out in the water and I have a trainer.

Let’s discuss how annoying dieting is. We’ll be in the islands, somewhere fabulous, and my friends will be eating really good fried food, and I can’t eat it! I love sweet plantain and rice and peas but if I do eat it, it’s in really small portions. Right now my metabolism is good so I can eat whatever I want, but I have to be sensible.

I don’t want to have to worry about my image all the time [but] unfortunately I can’t relax too much. Once, I was swimming in the sea off the island of Anguilla with my friend Jasmine Dotiwala, and she kept telling me to take off my sunglasses. I said, “I can’t! The paparazzi get everywhere and they have these awful long-lens cameras that see everything!” Eventually I gave in and took them off. But the next week, these pictures of me jumping off my boat with red, bloodshot eyes were all over the magazines!

I never leave home without my comfy sweat-suit. A friend bought it for me one Christmas. It’s black with a hoodie top, a huge blingy MC, and it has a graffiti-style picture on it of me walking my Jack Russell dog, Jack. It’s made by a young British designer called Batlow who’s part of the Ugly Kids Clothing Club. It’s comfy and stylish and I always wear it to travel.

My beauty icons are definitely Marilyn Monroe and Diana Ross. I love to switch up my own look. I have my hair blow-dried straight, curly, and sometimes I wear pigtails. My favourite is probably a straight style with my hair brushed over one eye.

My all-time favourite holiday destination has to be Capri. I like to hang out there on my boat with friends. I’ve just bought a house in the Bahamas, where I hope to spend as much time as possible. I also love spending Christmas holidays in Aspen, Colorado.

Mariah’s new album, E=MC², is due for release on 14 April on the Mercury label. Hew new movie, Tennessee, is out later this year

THREE OF THE BEST

STATEMENT EYES

1 Sweep the lightest shade from Benefit’s Big Beautiful Eyes (£15) shadow compact over lids. Using a contour brush, paint the crease of the lid with the medium shade and blend well. Line eyes with the darkest shade, applying it close to the upper lashes.

2 Use a creamy concealer under the eyes to banish bags and add radiance. Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat is still the best. Boost lashes with two coats of a volumising formula like YSL’s Mascara Effet Faux Cils, part of the All for Glamour (£32.50) set.

3 For added drama, apply a few false lashes to the corner of each eye. Eyelure Individual Lashes (£13.50) come in three lengths to give a natural look.
